Transparent smalto on clear glass panel
This is a piece I made at the end of my second year at the Scuola Mosaicisti Del Friuli. The theme for our final project was “repeating pattern”. I came up with this technique of working in pixels, and using a colored but transparent smalto for the image. The taller the tessera, the more light resistance and therefore the darker it would appear. So this is all the same color glass, just cut to different heights to create the chiaroscuro. At the time I wanted to make sure I used a face that was very easily recognizable because this was truly an experiment and I wasn’t sure how detailed the result would be - so I chose Abe, because everyone knows his face right? The effect ended up being great! I am planning on exploring this concept further.
