ASMR Scan Me (Concept)
2016
20 x 20 inches
Stone, self-leveling concrete on framed wood panel; video

This is a functional QR code. When I made this mosaic, I had just met my now-husband, who introduced me to the concept of ASMR. ASMR can take many forms, but the one that appealed to me the most were certain repetitive sounds like scratching or tapping. I thought cutting stone with a hammer had the potential to be good ASMR medium, so this idea was born. I filmed myself cutting the stone I used to make the mosaic, which itself links back to the video. The white stone is taller than the black, because of course I wanted a dimensional aspect (and didn’t want shadows on the white to throw off the legibility of the code).
I call this piece a concept because at the time I didn’t have the equipment to actually make a high-quality video, particularly the sound, which is so important to the success of the ASMR effect. Maybe in the future I will try it again.
