“Our Streets”
2020
9 x 7.25 inches
Hand-cut smalto, porcelain on wood panel
For this piece I was revisiting a theme of mine from several years ago, a take on a city map with bustling streets. I made this mosaic while the Black Lives Matter protests were at their height, and my concept was to illustrate that a city is its people. The “buildings” are porcelain, a relatively common and inexpensive mosaic material, while the “people” in the streets are smalto, a much more precious and vibrant material. The streets being higher than the buildings represents the power of the people to shape their city, not viceversa, and the importance of our voices coming together for what is right.
