Pockets

Lead sheet, nails on framed wooden panel

Pockets was an exercise in abnormal materials. I was a student when I made this piece, and the assignment was to make something inspired by a textile. I had found an image of some very loopy crochet or knit (something with yarn) that I found interesting, and decided to work based on that. I cut each pocket out of lead sheet - I never knew how many beautiful colors lead can have before this project! - and rolled back the edges; I built a styrofoam base for each one, and filled the “pocket” area by pushing small nails into it. Then I filled the space between each pocket with 5 strips of lead folded in half. It was a fairly tedious process, but as they say, beauty takes time.
